Pleasant Hill sits between Concord and Walnut Creek and quietly gets a lot right. Diablo Valley College is here, the Iron Horse Trail runs through, and the city built itself a downtown from scratch in the early 2000s when it decided it wanted one.

Why people move here

  • Downtown Pleasant Hill, around Crescent Drive — a deliberate, built-in-one-go center with a cinema, restaurants, and a plaza.
  • BART at Contra Costa Centre on Treat Boulevard, with a dense office-and-housing district grown up around the station itself.
  • Diablo Valley College, one of the larger community colleges in the state, sits right in town.
  • The Iron Horse Trail and Pleasant Hill Park, plus Briones Regional Park a few minutes west up Reliez Valley Road.

Neighborhoods

Gregory Gardens and Poets Corner are post-war streets on the north and west sides — the latter named for the streets themselves, which run Longfellow, Whittier, and so on. Sherman Acres sits near the college. Contra Costa Centre is the transit-oriented district at the BART station.

One quirk worth knowing: the station called Pleasant Hill is addressed in Walnut Creek, and Mt. Diablo Unified’s boundaries do not follow the city limits either. Check both for any specific address.
