Clayton is the town at the foot of the mountain. Ten thousand people, a downtown of about two blocks, and the Mitchell Canyon entrance to Mount Diablo State Park right inside city limits — you can be on a trail four minutes after leaving your driveway.
Why people move here
- Mount Diablo out the back door. Mitchell Canyon is the northern gateway into the state park, and Morgan Territory wraps around the eastern side.
- A small, intact downtown — The Grove Park hosts the summer concerts, and the Clayton Historical Society keeps the 1857 museum a block away.
- Ten minutes to Concord BART on Clayton Road, which is what makes a town this small workable for commuters.
- Marsh Creek Road heads east over the hills toward Brentwood — a genuinely scenic back way out of the valley.
Neighborhoods
Downtown Clayton is the old core around Main Street. Oakhurst spreads south around the golf course, and Regency climbs the slope toward the mountain on the east side.
Clayton is Mt. Diablo Unified, sharing the district with Concord next door. The city is also hemmed in by state and regional parkland on two sides, which leaves very little developable land inside its limits.
