Berkeley packs a lot into ten square miles: a major research university, three BART stations, a working waterfront, and hills that climb straight into Tilden Regional Park. The architecture is a large part of the draw — brown shingle, Craftsman, and Julia Morgan work still standing across whole blocks.
Why people move here
- Three BART stations — Downtown Berkeley, North Berkeley, and Ashby — so most of the city is a short ride or walk from a train. Embarcadero is about 25 minutes from Shattuck.
- UC Berkeley brings Zellerbach Hall, the Berkeley Art Museum, Cal Athletics, and the constant activity of a campus in the middle of town.
- Tilden Regional Park on the ridge — over two thousand acres, with the Botanic Garden, Lake Anza, and the Steam Trains.
- Distinct commercial districts rather than one downtown: Fourth Street, North Shattuck, Solano Avenue, Telegraph, and College Avenue each work differently.
Neighborhoods
Elmwood centers on College Avenue near the Oakland line. North Berkeley runs up from the Gourmet Ghetto toward Solano. The Berkeley Hills climb east toward Tilden, and West Berkeley covers the flats toward the bay, where much of the older industrial fabric has been converted.
The city changes character in a short distance — the flats near the water, the campus and downtown through the middle, the hills above. Ten minutes of driving covers all three.
